چکیده

Introduction To date, avian influenza virus (AIV) is an unpredictable pathogen affecting both animals, birds and people. The regular emergence of new strains and variants with different properties and pathogenicities requires additional monitoring and careful research of those viruses. It is known that wild birds— especially waterfowl and shorebirds— are the main and primary reservoir of AIV in nature which makes epizootological monitoring of populations of these birds necessary.

Risk Assessment of the Introduction and Spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses (H5-Subtypes) Via Migratory Birds in Iran

Background and Objectives: HPAI has economic and public health importance. Aquatic and shore migratory birds are the main reservoirs and the cause of the spread of viruses across countries. The aim of study was risk assessment of the spread of the avian influenza H5 viruses.   Methods: In this qualitative study, structured interviews and focus group discussions were used to assess the risk of...

Influenza A virus surveillance in wild birds

Surveillance studies in wild animals provide information on the prevalence of avian influenza viruses in the environment, and enables banking of reference reagents and putative vaccine strains to be used in times of outbreaks in humans and animals. In the past five years we have performed surveillance studies in wild birds primarily in The Netherlands and Sweden. In ducks, geese and gulls the p...

Avian influenza viruses in Minnesota ducks during 1998-2000.

Although wild ducks are known to be a major reservoir for avian influenza viruses (AIV), there are few recent published reports of surveillance directed at this group. Predominant AIV hemagglutinin (HA) subtypes reported in previous studies of ducks in North America include H3, H4, and H6, with the H5, H7, and H9 subtypes not well represented in these host populations. The objective of this stu...

Serological evidence of H7, H5 and H9 avian influenza virus co-infection among herons in a city park in Jiangxi, China

Extensive surveillance of influenza A viruses in different avian species is critical for understanding its transmission. Here, a breeding colony of Little Egrets and Black-crowned Night Herons was monitored both serologically and virologically in a city park of Jiangxi in 2009. A portion of herons had antibodies against H7 (52%), H5 (55%) and H9 (6%) subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) in egg y...

Avian influenza infections in birds – a moving target

Avian influenza (AI) is a complex infection of birds, of which the ecology and epidemiology have undergone substantial changes over the last decade. Avian influenza viruses infecting poultry can be divided into two groups. The very virulent viruses cause highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), with flock mortality as high as 100%. These viruses have been restricted to subtypes H5 and H7, alth...
